In northern germany some people can talk old saxon until today and in some words its really near the modern englisch. Look at the weekdays in englisch language, how near it is to the old northern kulture. Wednesday = wodans day (wodan is german for odin the godfather). Thursday = thors day (the god thor). Friday = freyas day (the wife of odin). The angels (engels) and saxons migrated aroud 450 a.d. to britannia.
